Mr John Andrews
Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
Mr Andrews is an Orthopaedic trained spinal surgeon. He qualified from Cardiff Medical School and completed his Orthopaedic training on the all Wales training program. His spinal fellowship was in Nottingham .
He specialises in adult and paediatric deformity surgery. He also has an interest in education: he has previously organised the Newcastle orthopaedic spinal training and is currently part of the teaching faculty for Medtronic and Globus.

Mr Andrew Bowey
Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
Mr Bowey read medicine at the University of Aberdeen where he was awarded both the orthopaedic and radiology medals. He completed the West of Scotland basic surgical training programme before moving to Liverpool for specialist orthopaedic training. Thereafter he was a fellow at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital (Liverpool), Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (Oswestry), Royal Victoria Infirmary & Great North Children’s Hospital (Newcastle) and Princess Alexandria & Queensland Children’s Hospital (Brisbane). Mr. Bowey started as a consultant in Newcastle in 2015 where he specialises in paediatric and adult deformity, utilising navigation, thoracoscopy, ALIF, OLIF and three column osteotomies. His research interests include explanted spinal implants and the growing spine. This work continues as part of his role on the panel for ODEP spine and the MHRA. Mr Bowey is an educationalist, working as Sub-Dean of Medicine & senior lecturer at Newcastle University along with regional post-graduate training..

Mr Malik Chandrappa
Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
Mr Chandrappa obtained his primary medical qualification (MBBS) from Mysore Medical college, India in 2002 and orthopaedic surgical training in PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research), a reputed teaching hospital in Chandigarh, India in 2006. He underwent spinal fellowship training at Apollo Hospitals Chennai, India from 2008 to 2010. He obtained FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2013.
He undertook Fellowships in Spinal Surgery at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, James Cook University hospital, Great Ormond street Hospital and University Hospital for Wales, Cardiff. He was appointed as Consultant Spine surgeon in Trauma and Orthopaedics at RVI, Newcastle from May 2020.
Mr Chandrappa specialises in treating patients with neck and back problems in adults with special interest in adult scoliosis.
Away from work, he loves cooking and reading and travelling.

Mr Cyril Dubois
Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon
Mr Dubois completed his specialist training in the Northern deanery. He joined the spinal department for his fellowship in 2017.
His main specialism is adult degenerative surgery. He is also the clinical governance lead for the musculoskeletal directorate and also has an educational supervision role.

Mr David Fender
Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
Mr Fender was appointed to Newcastle as a consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon in 2003 following a spinal fellowship with Geoff Askin in Brisbane. His present practice is predominately paediatric, treating spinal deformities. Since his appointment he have been actively involved with registrar and fellow training and previously was the organiser of the Northern Orthopaedic lecture programme and spinal lead for the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre. Currently he is the Clinical Lead for the Northern and North Cumbria Spinal Network.

Mr Alistair Irwin
Consultant Spinal Orthopaedic Surgeon
Grew up in Fife before studying at Newcastle University. Following surgical training he underwent specialist spinal fellowships in Newcastle before winning the BOA Soli Lam travelling fellowship award to Birmingham, Oxford and Copenhagen.
As well as general spinal surgery he specialises in spinal tumours including spinal sarcoma surgery and reconstruction. As such Newcastle is one of only 4 centres in the UK regularly treating this rare patient group. Research interests include recent papers on ‘outcomes following high sacral resection in Chordomas’ + ‘Recent advances in sarcoma surgery’ as well as papers on Tranexamic acid in arthroplasty and needle placement in nerve root blocks.

Mr Paul Rushton
Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
Mr Rushton graduated with honours from Nottingham Medical School in 2009. His interest in paediatric spinal surgery grew during this time through research with Michael Grevitt. He undertook orthopaedic training in the Northern Deanery including spinal training in Newcastle and neighbouring units. Subsequently he did a years paediatric deformity fellowship in the British Columbia Children’s Hospital, Vancouver. He then completed the Complex Spine Fellowship in Leeds. His consultant elective practice is around 75% paediatric deformity with the remainder adult lumbar/cervical degenerative work. He has a strong interest in clinical research in paediatric spinal deformities with regular publications in this field. He is a member of the British Scoliosis Society (sits on research committee) and an active member of Scoliosis Research Society. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family, rugby union and test match cricket.

Mr Paul Sanderson
Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
Qualified in Manchester 1984 and trained in Manchester and Sheffield. Did a spinal fellowship in Adelaide with Professor RD Fraser and Prof N Jones.
Paul has an adult spinal surgery practice with his main interest in the degenerative lumbar spine. More recently he has taken an interest in the Sacroiliac Joint.
He has published numerous papers on spinal issues, with current interests in the epidemiology of back pain and the role of vertebroplasty in osteoporotic fractures.
